Found this in a Dumpster and (WikiLeaks-style) thought I’d share.  It’s the beginning of an early draft of that book about the tightrope walker.  I’m guessing this version felt a little too on-the-nose or something.

Dear old Ma, playing jazzy piano with her broken hand.  This was back in the fifties, in Dublin.  Dear old Dublin with its beachy bay.  We were the only ones in all of it with a piano.  The piano was new and it kind of sucked.  But ah, the way Ma’s crumpled fingers walked those keys that thrummed those inner wires.  Hey, speaking of walking on wires, when I made it to America I saw the damnedest thing…
